The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

A seat wall is a retaining wall, an edge and a bench at once. At about 18 inches tall with a comfortable cap, it frames a patio or fire pit, holds back a small grade change and seats a crowd. We build them in matching block, natural stone or veneer, curve them to fit the layout and cap them with smooth stone that is comfortable to sit on.

In Nashville backyards, seat walls solve a common problem: patios on slightly sloped yards that need a low edge. We can add lighting under the cap, built-in planters or steps through the wall, and we plan drainage so water does not collect behind it.

Good questions

Seat Walls & Built-In Benches: common questions

How tall is a good seat wall?

Around 16 to 20 inches is comfortable for most adults. We can go taller for a bar-height edge or lower for informal seating.

Can a seat wall hold back soil?

Yes, for small grade changes, with proper footing and drainage. Larger changes need a retaining wall design.
