Turn a steep yard into usable levels.
Stepped retaining walls, planted terraces, stairs and landings that turn a slope into flat, usable rooms.
- Typical tiers: 2 to 4 levels
- Wall options: Block or natural stone
- Access: Stairs and paths between levels

What it is, and why it matters.
A steep yard wastes space and washes out in the rain. Terracing breaks the slope into a series of level areas held by walls of block or stone, connected by stairs or paths and planted to hold the soil. The right terrace plan balances wall height, drainage and use: a patio level, a garden level, a play level.
Nashville's hillside lots often call for two or three tiers, each with its own drainage and a clear way up and down. We design the heights and set backs so no single wall is too tall, then build in an order that keeps the slope stable at every stage.
Four things done right.
Level space you can use
Patios, gardens and lawn on the slope.
Lower walls, safer design
Several short walls beat one tall one.
Drainage on every tier
Water carried off each level safely.
Stairs that connect
Comfortable routes between levels.

Terraced Yards: common questions
How many tiers does my yard need?
It depends on the slope and the wall heights you prefer. Shorter walls are safer and easier to build, so we often use more, shorter tiers rather than one tall wall.
Will terraces fix my washout problem?
Terracing with proper drainage and planting is one of the best fixes for erosion. We combine walls, swales and drains so rain has a safe path.
